Steven Altschuler brings nearly 20 years of experience building and leading world-class, integrated, translational, value-based health care systems and transformational biotechnology companies.
He currently serves as managing director of healthcare ventures at Ziff Capital Partners (ZCP). At ZCP, he leads the firm’s effort to start up new companies at the intersection of machine learning and cellular and molecular sciences with the goal of democratizing and enhancing the availability of novel therapies worldwide.
Dr. Altschuler developed this expertise while cofounding Spark Therapeutics to develop and commercialize the preclinical and clinical gene therapy programs advanced at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and other institutions. He was the company’s board chair since its founding, and helped lead its successful transition to a public company and the first ever approval by both the FDA and European Medicines Agency (EMA) for a gene therapy (LUXTURNA) for an inherited genetic disease (RPE65-associated inherited blindness) in 2017-18. Spark Therapeutics was acquired by Roche Holding AG for $4.8B in December 2019
At ZCP, he has previously led investments and company building expertise at Affinavax. Affinivax pioneered a next generation vaccine technology platform called the Multiple Antigen Presentation System (MAPS) that was recently acquired by GSK for $3.3B.
Dr. Altschuler currently is board chair at 89Bio, Lexeo Tx, Port Tx and Avista Tx. He is also a trustee of the POLG foundation and the Institute of Innovative Genomic at the University of California, Berkley. Dr. Altschuler holds a BA in mathematics and an MD from Case Western Reserve University.
